HISTORY OF ORCHARD ROAD
0rchard Road is located in the heart of Singapore , just above the Central Business District .It stretches from Tanglin Road to Bras Basah Road, although it has been observed that 0rchard Road traditionally ends in the Dhoby Ghaut Area.
Unlike many roads in Singapore,0rchard Road was mot named after any particular person.Instead,0rchard Road got its name from the many nutmeg and pepper plantations that lined the street during the 1840s. Thinly populated, only residents were plantation owners like Scotts, Cairnhill, and Cuppage, whose namesare familiar as street names today.
There were no houses to the south of 0rchard Road. As the city developed and progressed inland from the Padang area, the plantations in 0rchard area , the plantations in orchard area gave way to residential development. Many private houses, mainly bungalows of the old peranakan style, began to dominate the Scotts Road and Tanglin Road and areas. Shophouse developments were built in the orchard Road and Somerset Road areas closer to Dhoby Ghaut as the city grew.
In the 1900s,a mysterious disease swept through the nutmeg plantations, wiping them out within a year. At the same time , commercial developments began at 0rchard Road. This signalled the evolution of 0rchard Road into the vibrant commercial district of today. In1917, the Singapore Cold Storage Company opened a store to distribute food supplies. Cold storage was also the first supermarket to introduce ice-cream to Singapore. The 0rchard Road Market provided fresh produce for the residents. Motor workshops sprouted around the Kramat Road area to service the growing number of vehicles.
In the 1950s ,CK Tang opened a departmental store at 0rchard Road. The coffee shops and hawker stalls at Koek Lane were favourite eating places.
Through the 1960s and into 1970s, entertainment centres such as Lido Cinema, 0rchard Theatre, Raffles village and Jackie’s Bowl were opened. Eating places such as Cairnhill Steak House, Pavilion Steak House, Mont’dor Café were popular with Singaporeans and expatriates alike.
In the 1970s through the 1980s, development intensified. Hotels such as Forum Inter-Continental, Ming Court, Mandarin and Hilton were built to serve the booming tourist industry in Singapore. Huge departmental stores such as Plaza Singapura, Far East Shopping Centre and Centrepoint were built to reinforce Singapore’s as the emporium to the world. Brick by brick, and block by block, towers of glass and steel line what used to be mud-tracks to make 0rchard Road the upbeat lifestyle hub it is today.
ORCHARD ROAD TODAY
The 0rchard Road of today is a rich and exciting experience to delight the senses, bustling with a vibrant mix of East and West. It glistens with new towers of steel and glass, glittering examples of the things that Singapore has to offer. Yet 0rchard Road never forgets its botanical roots ,with leafy Angsana trees and lush landscaping lining the walkways, exuding a shade of tropical romance.
